Shoulder Dystocia - Prevention

While not all shoulder dystocia can be prevented, many can. The first step is to properly follow the mother and baby during the prenatal care. Close attention must be paid to unusual fetal growth, excessive weight gain and gestational diabetes. Ultrasound has been shown effective in evaluating the fetal growth, both weight and size. Ultrasound in conjunction with proper, trained clinical examination can identify the mother whose baby is at risk. Cesarean section at times may be employed to eliminate the chance of a shoulder dystocia.
