Shoulder Dystocia - Macrosomia

Macrosomia is a medical term that simply means that there is a very large fetus/newborn. The precise size to define Macrosomia varies from author to author and professional group. Weights of 4000grams (8lbs.13 oz.) to 4500grams(9lbs.15ozs.) have been discussed. There is a high likelihood of having a Macrosomic baby if the pregnancy is one where the mother develops PREGNANCY INDUCED DIABETES ALSO CALLED GESTATIONAL DIABETES (see the section on gestational diabetes). The true concern is that some studies have shown that in ALMOST 70% OF THE CASES OF SHOULDER DYSTOCIA OCCUR IN INFANTS WHO WEIGHT MORE THEN 4000 grams.
