Antepartum Monitoring
While the use of fetal monitoring during labor is common, the use of monitoring prior to labor beginning is also an effective means of assuring all that the baby is safely growing while inside its mother. The pregnancy before the beginning of labor is known as the antepartum period. As the pregnancy gets closer to the due date and if it goes beyond the due date, monitoring the baby is an excellent way of determining if the pregnancy can safely continue or if prompt delivery will save the baby from harm.
